Letta says budget will need ‘many’ improvements

Letta says budget will need 'many' improvements (ANSA) – Rome, October 22 – The 2014 budget in its present form will need improvements, Premier Enrico Letta said Tuesday.

Speaking to the Senate, Letta said that tax measures in particular must be altered.

“It is true that there are many improvements to be put in place,” Letta said. Last week Letta’s left-right government unveiled a budget bill aimed at addressing the country’s economic woes while sticking to EU-mandated targets.

Letta said then that the thrust of the three-year budget was to stoke growth by cutting taxes while averting spending cuts.

However, critics have complained that none of the measures go far enough to make any real change.

Payroll taxes are a particular target, as employers’ groups and unions say the budget does not provide enough employment incentives including encouragement to create more permanent work from temporary contracts.
