Easter holiday ‘boom’ in air travel

P(ANSA) – Rome, April 18 – Airline passenger traffic over the Easter weekend was expected to jump by fully 27% compared with one year earlier in Milan, while roads and rail lines will also be busy despite weekend weather warnings in parts of Italy.BRAirport traffic in Milan’s two major airports was forecast Friday to reach about 600,000 for the period running from Friday through April 24 – a 27% increase over last year’s Easter holiday period, according airport management.BRMany are flying within Europe but others are traveling as far as the Maldives and the Caribbean, as well as to cities in the Middle East and North America. About 13 million trips will be made by travelers moving around Italy during the next 10 days, taking advantage of both the Easter weekend and the April 25 Liberation Day holiday, according to consumer and retail organizations.BRMany will be one-day trips or visits to family and friends rather than stays in resorts or hotels, as the economy remains weak and many consumers are reluctant to spend.BRThe weather may also dampen holiday spirits with warnings of rain possible over the Easter weekend, particularly concentrated on Saturday.BRSnow in the Alps in Italy’s northwest was expected, with heavy rains at lower altitudes, said weather expert Edoardo Ferrara at 3bmeteo.com.BRRain will continue Sunday in Italy’s north while in the centre and south, winds and clouds will threaten but temperatures will rise to as much as 22 degrees C in central regions, and peak at 26 degrees C in Sicily, he said.BRMore showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Monday in central Italy, including Tuscany, with snow continuing in the Alps.BR/P
